On Chi- Life Function

Reading:

The Chi of Nourishment and the Chi of Protection

Ying qi is the “Chi of Nourishment,” the chi which nourishes your body. It is the refined aspect of the essence of food which is combined together with your Life-force to provide nourishment for the body.

The wai qi, is the “Chi of Protection,” the chi which protects your body. It is the rough aspect of the food essence, which is combined together with your Life-force to protect and guard your body.

The Chi of Protection and the Chi of Nourishment have to be in harmony. The rough Chi of Protection moves to the outside to protect your body, while the refined Chi of Nourishment moves inside to nourish your body.

The Chi of Originality

The yuan qi, “Chi of Originality,” is actually the ongoing Origin Chi. Without the Chi of Originality you would not be able to use the food you eat, for you would no longer be alive. You initially receive the Chi of Originality from your parents, but you continually recharge it throughout your life. Finally it weakens; you can no longer use your food, and then you die.

The Source Chi

The zong qi, “the Source Chi,” arises from the essence of the food you eat being combined with the air you inhale into your chest. The food essence and the inhaled air combine in your chest to form the Source Chi. This Source Chi then goes outside the chest and is transformed into the Chi of Nourishment and the Chi of Protection which in turn move out and circulate through your body to nourish and protect or guard it. So the Source Chi is the “root,” like the ancestor, foundation, principle thing.

In one sense it is the zong qi, the Source Chi, which makes possible all your bodily actions and functions. On the other hand, it is the yuan qi, the Chi of Originality, which enables the stomach to transform food into the essence needed for the generation of Source Chi. In reality, the Source Chi and Origin Chi are operating in cyclical interdependence.

The Center Chi

The “Center Chi,” zhongqi, is a function of the stomach and spleen. It helps to keep the internal organs in their proper location and helps to nourish other chi. If the Center Chi is functioning poorly, you cannot convert food into essence. When the Center Chi is unwell, everything inside collapses; for example, the uterus or anus may prolapse. Also, when the Center Chi is unwell problems are caused in the Chi of Nourishment, Protection, Source, and Originality.

Level 1: Paraphrasing-

State in your own words the meaning of each sentence.

The Chi of Nourishment and the Chi of Protection

The “Chi of Nourishment,” supplies your body with clean, healthy, distilled food. This is mixed with your Life-force to feed your body.

The Chi of Protection, protects your body with unfinished, distilled food. This is mixed with your Life-force to take care and defend your body.

The Chi of Protection and Chi of Nourishment must balance each other. The Chi of Protection moves outside to protect your body. The Chi of Nourishment moves inside to protect your body.

The Chi of Originality

The “Chi of Originality,” is the continuation of the Origin Chi. You need the Chi of Originality to eat and live. You got the Chi of Originality from your parents but you put new energy into it throughout your life. When it gets weak you stop eating and you die.

The Source Chi

The “Source Chi,” comes from the distilled food you eat and the air you breathe into your chest. The distilled food and air mix in your chest to form the Source Chi. Then the Source Chi moves outside the chest to become the Chi of Nourishment and the Chi of Protection. The Chi of Nourishment and the Chi of Protection circulate throughout your body to feed and defend it. The Source Chi is the root, your true foundation.

The Source Chi gives power to your body to move and function. The Chi of Originality provides the means for the stomach to change and distill food for the creation of Source Chi. The Source Chi and Origin Chi are connected.

The Center Chi

The Center Chi, determines how well the stomach and spleen perform. The Center Chi helps the internal organs stay where they are and helps to feed the other chi. If the Center Chi doesn’t work well, you are unable to distill food that is healthy. When the Center Chi is sick you breakdown inside. When the Center Chi is sick the Chi of Nourishment, Protection, Source, and Originality are also sick.
